On “Good Friday” (some say, Wednesday or Thursday) we remember Calvary, the place of the crucifixion. Calvary was a gory, bloody, horrifying spectacle of suffering and torture. Crucifixion could only have been dreamed up by Satan to be the most painful, tortuous death that could ever have been imagined by men. Satan himself concocted this form of torture for His arch-enemy, the Son of God. It comes right out of the pits of hell. But Calvary is a beautiful place to us, the redeemed, only because of what God accomplished there. “The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God” (1 Corinthians 1:18 NLT). It is beautiful to those of us whose lives have been changed by His death and resurrection. “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT).
By Christ’s single offering on Calvary, He did everything that needed to be done to guarantee forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Him. The Holy Spirit confirms this: “But our High Priest (Jesus) offered Himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time” (Hebrews 10:12 NLT). “Christ died for our sins…” (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). “Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but He died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but He was raised to life in the Spirit” (1 Peter 3:18 NLT). CHRIST DIED, ONCE FOR ALL PEOPLE, ONCE FOR ALL SIN AND ONCE FOR ALL TIME! “And He Himself is the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world” (1 John 2:2).
